¡No me dolió mucho que digamos! Spanish advaced expression
Mis amores, today we have a practical Spanish excersice that will let us learn a very common expression used in the “street Spanish”.
… Que digamos. A very common expression in Spanish
Adding the expression que digamos at the end of negative sentences is common in Spanish, but before getting deeper in the subject, let’s watchthis video of Chavo del 8.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=763QlqGActs
Did you listen at the end of the video the expression “no me dolió mucho que digamos”. Well, now that you have watch the whole story, you can understand that they sayed that with irony. Actually it really cause them pain, but the characters didn’t really want to show their weakness.
At the end of negative sentences, we can add the Spanish common expression “QUE DIGAMOS” to attenuate the meaning of the sentece or to avoid using negative adjectives. Let’s check some examples:
- No es muy amable que digamos.
The sentece above really means that he or she is actually a mine person, but me, (because I’m talking) I don’t want to be rude saying it in those words so I use an euphemism.
- No es muy talentoso que digamos.
He ain’t really tallented.
- No está tan lejos que digamos.
It means that it isn’t that far… but it isn’t close neither.
Other similar and common expressions in Spanish
Digamos que….
This is used in the begining of some sentences and it shows us some hipothetical or ideal situations. When you say “digamos que…” you’re showing a possibility so you can plan according to that hipothetical situation. Let’s fin some examples:
Conversation between a mother and a son when he is deciding what would he study at school:
Cómo no (Sarcasm)
Cómo no, when is used in this way, there is sound of the first or is stressed (cóooomo no). It’s used to answer to a statement letting clear that we do not think that it never happened or wont happen.
Ejemplo:
Hijo: Papá, el computador se dañó solo, yo no le hice nada.
Papá: Cómo no. Tú mirarás cómo lo arreglas.
Explanation: It’s obvious that the father doesn’t believe that his son haven’t done anything that could damage the computer, that’s why he says: cóoomo no. That how he denies his son’s statement.
